Since the relocation from Ouddorp to the outer harbour in
Stellendam, the fish auction operated under the authority
of the borough. The auction became independent in 1999 and
merged one year later with the auction companies in Scheveningen
and Colijnsplaat to form United Fish Auctions.
The fish auction employs its own team of 30 experienced unloaders
and sorters. In 2004, the auction traded 6652 tons of fish.
Its annual turnover was 25 million euros.
The fish auction houses at least 50 cutters in its own harbour
on the outside of the Haringvliet Dam. The inner harbour (accessible
via the lock) can accommodate another 30 cutters. Stellendam's
harbour is tidal, and therefore large cutters can only sail
in from two hours before to two hours after high tide. In
principle, Euro cutters can access the harbour at all times.
